Hello folks, welcome to my very first Roads to the Red Night, and let's drink to have more in the future. The start of every project is always scary, at this moment I don't know if this will be a success that will allow me to live a bit better or a doomed project that will end up doomed in the endless pit of abandoned visual novels, all piled up in the ashes of the hopes and dreams of so many. Alas, I am being melodramatic, am I not? I wouldn't be much of a writer if I wasn't. Perhaps in the future I will look at this first blog post and think, "oh, I was 39 and innocent, I am so happy now that I live in a mansion and belittle my house service over made up problems". Or perhaps I will forget because it all came to nothing. 

So this visual novel as it is was done over a couple of months, but the ideas have been brewin' in my head ever since I read William Burroughs "Naked Lunch" in 2017, a particular piece of queer literature which is hard to recommend, but is among the most fascinating books I have read. The surrealist world of the Interzone fascinated me, and I wanted to create a character inspired by it. After a few fake starts I abandoned the project until I started playing a Fate TTRPG game set in that universe, directed by my friend Kaetunga.

Of course, the world of Roads of the Red Night is not a direct adaptation of William Burrough's Interzone. The first and most obvious reason is that I want to create my own lore, for starts this one is full of furries, oh no, cringe. Second and less obvious, the Interzone is so chaotic and fucked up it would be unacceptable to adapt and it and I'd be cancelled for good reason. Hey, it's good literature, but some parts are beyond offensive by every imaginable standard.

So anyway, this is my visual novel inspired by an American writer who wrote in the North of Africa. As for the fictional country this is happening in, well, I have a rather intimate relationship with the country of Tunisia, even if I haven't been there in the past 15 years.  But that is for another post.
